Coastal Zone and Coastal Resource Management Plan 2015

As per the legal provisions of the Coast Conservation Act No. 57 of 1981, the first generation “Coastal Zone Management Plan” was prepared by the Department of Coast Conservation in 1990 and subsequently it was revised in 1997 and 2004.

The Coastal Zone and Coastal Resource Management Plan – 2015 is prepared as per the provisions of the Coast Conservation / Coastal Resource Management Act No. 57 of 1981, and the Amendment Act No. 49 of 2011.

This plan provides the policy guidelines for the implementation of the Coastal Zone and Coastal Resources Management Programme of Sri Lanka, which was initiated in 1978 with the establishment of the Coast Conservation Division in the Ministry of Fisheries in 1978. Later, the Division was upgraded to a Class A Department, and currently functions under the Ministry of Mahaweli Development & Environment. This plan has been prepared in its entirety by local experts and officers of the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management. This has been possible due to the expertise in the subject area developed under the programme over the last thirty five years. Sri Lanka today has one of the most technologically advanced programmes in the region.
